Jay R. Carson is running for state office as the District 13 Representative to the Ohio House of Representative. District 13 encompasses parts of Lakewood and Cleveland. Jay has gained significant legislative experience by serving as a legislative aide to the Ohio General Assembly, through his work for the Cuyahoga County Workforce Investment Board and Lakewood Civil Service Commission, and through his representation of clients in government-related matters.
On May 23, 2018, Wegman Law’s WAVE (Women Achieving Victory Everyday) group hosted Dr. Francoise Adan, the Endowed Connor Chair of Integrative Medicine at University Hospitals, for a discussion on managing stress and building resilience. The event was well-attended and marked the largest attendance for a WAVE event so far. Stay tuned for information regarding future WAVE events.
Peter A. Hessler and Aaron A. Hessler presented at the Future Lutheran Administrators – Midwest Educators (FLAME) Conference on June 19, 2018 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Their presentation consisted of an overview of key legal issues facing Lutheran Schools in the current social and political climate.
Peter A. Holdsworth and Jay R. Carson obtained a preliminary injunction enforcing a noncompete agreement against an international competitor for a manufacturing client in the U.S. Northern District of Ohio.
Jay R. Carson and Dr. Michael Baranowski, Associate Professor of Political Science at Northern Kentucky University, will be presenting at the Northern District of Ohio Chapter, Federal Bar Association 2018 State of the Court Luncheon on October 9, 2018. Jay and Dr. Baranowski will be speaking about the political process in the federal judiciary.
Rachel E. Lyons recently secured a temporary restraining order on behalf of the beneficiaries to a trust and thereby protected the assets of the trust from being further depleted by the now erstwhile trustee. The matter is now in mediation as Rachel seeks to recover as much of the former assets as possible.
The litigation team successfully appealed to the Eighth District Court of Appeals, which overturned the trial court’s dismissal of a negligent promotion case involving the wrongful death of an employee.
Richard T. Coyne secured a favorable summary judgment decision on behalf of an international manufacturing client in a products liability case in which a wrongful death action in the U.S. Southern District of Ohio was dismissed.
Richard T. Coyne won a defense verdict in a trial on behalf of a manufacturing client in a products liability action filed in federal court in Seattle, Washington.
Benjamin B. Cotton assisted in successfully defending a client’s European patent during an Opposition Proceeding in Munich, Germany.

Martin L. Kerr has joined Wegman Law as an associate in our Corporate and Business Services Department. Prior to coming to Wegman, Martin worked as both a financial analyst and a contract and compliance manager for several large global organizations where he developed long term approaches to balancing both legal and business needs. Martin has counseled a diverse group of clients ranging from agile, entrepreneurs to more well known, multi-billion dollar corporations. Utilizing his business acumen, he is able to advise clients on a diverse range of business transactions.
We are pleased to announce that effective January 1, 2018, Peter A. Hessler began serving as the Managing Partner of Wegman Law and Angela M. Lavin became the General Counsel of Wegman Law. As of January 1, 2018, Keith A. Vanderburg stepped aside as Wegman Law’s Managing Partner and we would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and thank Keith for his long and successful leadership of Wegman Law. Keith will continue as a partner on a full-time basis and serves on our Board of Directors.
Christopher A. Holecek and Angela M. Lavin have been nominated as Ohio Super Lawyers. Each year, no more than five percent of the lawyers in the State are selected by the research team at Super Lawyers to receive this honor.
Jessica L. MacKeigan has been selected as Ohio Rising Stars. Each year, no more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in the State are selected by the research team at Super Lawyers to receive this honor.

Michelle Fabry has joined Wegman Law as an associate in our Intellectual Property Department. Michelle is a 2016 graduate of The University of Akron School of Law, and practices intellectual property law, focusing on patent preparation and prosecution, patentability searching and analysis, as well as trademark procurement.
Lawrence S. Crowther serves as Chairman of the International Law Section of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association. The CMBA ILS presented several important programs and seminars in 2017, including “Impact of India’s New Law – GST in M&A Deals”, “What is the Future of NAFTA – the North American Free Trade Agreement,” and “Doing Business Internationally: Why You Need to Know Your Business Partner.”
Wegman Law employees raised over $600 and collected 15 boxes of food and supplies benefitting the Parma Hunger Center in their annual food drive. Our employees also collected 4 boxes of toys for the annual Toys for Tots Program. In addition, in 2017, our employees raised over $1,400 for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Wegman Law is proud to announce that Peter A. Hessler was recently featured in an article published in the Attorney at Law Magazine®. In the article, Peter shares his thoughts regarding his nearly 39 years in the practice of law and his continuing pride in the legal profession. Peter believes that helping the firm’s clients receive the justice they deserve is the most rewarding aspect of his work. In the article, Peter talks about his opportunity to practice law with two of his children, Rachel Lyons and Aaron Hessler. Christopher A. Holecek was recently named a 2016-2017 Community Service Award winner of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service.
Rachel E. Lyons was recently appointed by the Ohio State Bar Association Leadership Academy Advisory Council to be a member of its 2018 Leadership Academy. Rachel will be joining attorneys from around Ohio for the opportunity to network, collaborate, and build relationships with leaders in the legal profession.
Angela M. Lavin will be speaking at National Business Institute’s December seminar entitled, “Business Attorney’s Guide to Information Technology” on December 19, 2017.
Jay R. Carson successfully resolved a private eminent domain legal action in the Lorain County Court of Common Pleas, resulting in the dismissal of the action. Wegman Law’s successful defense strategy will result in the payment of some of our client’s legal fees.
Christopher A. Holecek and his team won a verdict on behalf of our clients in a contentious employment, trade secret and non-compete case.
Richard T. Coyne and his team won a defense verdict on behalf of our client in a product liability action filed in Federal Court in Boston, Massachusetts.
Lawrence S. Crowther represented one of Wegman Law’s clients in connection with the recent acquisition of substantially all of the assets of a manufacturing business located in Sheffield, England. Wegman Law coordinated the negotiation and closing of the transaction along with Stuart Haynes of Aaron & Partners as English counsel. Wegman Law and Arron & Partners are Members of IAG/Integrated Advisory Group International.
Peter A. Holdsworth, Angela M. Lavin and Christopher A. Holecek volunteered at Bard Early College last semester in conjunction with the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association Mock Trial Competition. Their team prevailed on two trials during the competition, and one of their students won the outstanding defense attorney award.
Christopher A. Holecek was a guest speaker at the Federation Defense and Corporate Counsel Conference in Charleston, South Carolina in March 2017 regarding Data Breach, Privacy and Cyber Insurance.
Charles A. Hayes spoke at the National Business Institute-Manufacturing Law seminar in Cleveland on June 26th. Topics covered were Ethics and Cybersecurity from the perspective of the duty to safeguard a client’s confidential information.
Keith A. Vanderburg has completed 25 years of service on the Board of Directors of North Coast Health, a charitable medical clinic in Lakewood, Ohio providing quality medical care and healing to those most in need, regardless of ability to pay.
Peter A. Hessler, Esq. was featured in a book recently published, entitled, Top Lawyers: The Secrets To Their Success by Worldwide Publishing (2017). Mr. Hessler’s article begins with how he knew that he wanted to be a lawyer at the age of 13 and he pursued a legal career because he viewed it (and still does) as a noble profession.
Lesley A. Weigand, Esq. and Rachel E. Lyons, Esq. recently obtained a complete dismissal with prejudice for clients in the Summit County Common Pleas Court who were sued for violations of the Ohio Consumer Sales Practices Act, Breach of Contract, Fraud and Misrepresentation.
Richard T. Coyne was awarded the prestigious Workers Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to the work of Trial Attorneys of America. In addition, Attorney Coyne recently addressed the American Society for Quality. The subject matter was “Best Practices: When an Accusatory Finger is Pointed at a Manufacturer’s Design and Quality Assurance Team.”
Jason A. Worgull and IP team members recently presented a program entitled “International Intellectual Property Protection and Strategies” at a Continuing Legal Education program sponsored by the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association.
Jay R. Carson successfully represented a local machine tool technology company in a matter involving the theft of the client’s trade secrets by a multi-national competitor. Shortly after suit was filed, the competitor agreed to not only destroy and never otherwise use any information it may have obtained by questionable means, but also agreed to pay all of our client’s legal fees and expenses.
Wegman Hessler & Vanderburg was recently recognized in Crain’s Cleveland Business as one of the thirty largest law firms in Northeast Ohio.
Aaron A. Hessler recently joined the firm as an associate in the Litigation Department. Aaron graduated from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law on May 13, 2016, successfully sat for the Ohio State Bar Exam in July 2016, and was sworn in to the Ohio State Bar on November 7, 2016.
Jessica L. MacKeigan has joined the firm as an associate in the Litigation Department. Jessica is a 2010 graduate of the Cleveland Marshall College of Law. Before entering private practice, Jessica was a Judicial Law Clerk and Staff Attorney in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.
