New Year, New Beginning? January is the Unofficial “Divorce Month”
Every January traditionally sees a spike in divorce filings. Most family law attorneys recognize January as an unofficial “divorce month” with filings trending upward 25% to 30% during the month according to a recent New York Post article.
It is no surprise that the stress and obligations of the holidays can strain an already difficult marriage, pushing many to file for divorce after the festivities have ended. Some couples also simply wait until after the holidays to avoid having the additional stress of a divorce action, especially if they have children. Others look at a new year as an opportunity to start with a “clean slate.”
When the pressure comes to a boiling point and the promise of a new year looms ahead, it is best to schedule a consultation with an experienced family law attorney before rushing to the courthouse. Learning more about the process, options available with regard to the termination of a marriage, and setting reasonable expectations will help to make a very difficult time more bearable.
